Year 3 & Year 4 2022 - 2023

Welcome to Year 3 and Year 4 (Class 6, Class 7 and Class 8)

Dear Parents,

We are so pleased to welcome the children and you to Year 3 and 4. This year will be a wonderful year full of exciting learning opportunities and fun. For some this will be a year of change for your children as they move from Key Stage 1 into Year 3. The engaging and challenging curriculum in Year 3 and 4 will give the children access to a variety of different experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.

 Staffing in each team:

In Year 3 will be a new member of the team, Miss Addis working alongside Mrs Knowles.

In the Year 3 / 4 mixed class in Miss Platt and Rev Hassall

In Year 4 there will also be another new member, Miss Gee working with Mrs Ferris.

Additional support within the team are Mrs Foley on a Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday and Mrs Parsons.

This year we have lots of exciting topics planned, where the children will build on a love for learning and make more magical memories. Our first topic will have a historical focus as we delve into The Stone Age. We will use the book Stone Age Boy as a stimulus for this topic by Satoshi Kitamura. Running alongside this we have our science topic which will focus on Forces and the children will learn how forces impact on their everyday lives.

Useful information:

Timings- For all classes in Years 3 and 4, their school day starts at 8:45am. Please enter via the Key Stage 2 gate where your children will be greeted by a member of the team. Collection is at 15:15pm at the same gate.

Snacks – Please send snacks in a small, named container or with their name written on the snack. Healthy snacks which do not contain any nuts please.

Reading - We will read with your child every day as part of a whole class guided reading session. Reading is such a vital part of your child’s learning so please continue to read at home with your child; 10 minutes a day really does make all the difference. Please write in your child’s diary that they have read. As always at Cledford, the expectation is that all children read at home with an adult at least 5 times each week and that the diary is completed for every read. Our reading diaries can also be used as a means of communication between home and school to pass on messages or ask questions. Children are responsible for selecting their own reading book of their level and will be shown where to choose these from at the beginning of the school year.

Spellings- There is a list of words that children should be able to spell by the end of Year 3 and 4. These will be provided in September. Children must practice these spellings at home, while work in school is planned carefully to give plenty of opportunities to use and apply them. Similarly, during the course of the year, children will be taught a number of spelling rules for which many of these words apply.

Homework – Homework will be sent home on a Friday and should be handed in the following Wednesday. This will be a range of tasks related to our current learning. Weekly spellings will also be in their homework book. Don't forget to keep a copy of your spellings at home so that you can learn them after handing your homework book in.

PE - PE this term will be on a Monday for Miss Platt’s class and for Miss Gee’s Class and Thursday for Miss Addis’ class. Please ensure all P.E kit is labelled.

Pencil cases- Your child will be given their own pencil case and equipment to keep in school. They will not need to bring in any further stationery.

Please put your child’s name on ALL their belongings!

Educational Visits

We plan to go on several educational visits throughout the year, including a residential for Miss Platt’s and Miss Gee’s class to Robin Wood. Further details will be sent out about these visits and there will a parent meeting where you can find out more information about the residential closer to the time.

In advance, we would like to thank all parents and guardians for your support, enthusiasm and most importantly thank you for trusting us with your amazing children. Let’s get started on a wonderful year!
