Writing
We aim for all children to become fluent, enthusiastic readers and confident, creative writers. Our personalised, rich curriculum fosters a lifelong love of reading and writing, built on high-quality texts and vocabulary-rich experiences. While the National Curriculum underpins our teaching, we enhance it to ensure pupils know more, remember more and understand more. We want our learners to be motivated, reflective, and resilient.
Intent
We want every child to become a skilled writer who:
Writes creatively, fluently and accurately in any genre
Understands grammar, punctuation and spelling rules
Writes clearly and takes pride in presentation
Uses a rich vocabulary to communicate effectively
Edits and improves their writing
Across the wider curriculum, pupils regularly apply their writing and spoken language skills in varied contexts.
Implementation
High-quality texts drive our English curriculum, inspiring engaging writing opportunities across genres and subjects. Pupils learn to structure writing effectively, considering audience and purpose.
Writing skills are developed not only in English lessons but through cross-curricular tasks. Vocabulary is explored and embedded through discussion and regular use.
Spelling is taught sequentially, with regular sessions in KS2 and phonics in EYFS and KS1. Grammar and punctuation are taught within English lessons and reinforced through focused sessions when needed.
Impact
Our pupils leave Cledford as confident, articulate writers who can craft creative, well-structured and technically accurate work. They express themselves clearly in writing and speech.
