Welcome to Year 6

Year 6 is an important year where we focus on building independence, resilience and confidence.

Children read diverse texts, analyse language and structure and refine advanced grammar, punctuation, writing for different purposes. We use high quality texts, both fiction and non-fiction, to inspire our writing and to offer the best possible models.

They deepen understanding of place value, fractions, decimals, percentages, shape, measures and data, solving complex problems with clear reasoning and formal methods.

Science topics include light, electricity, evolution, inheritance and the human body, with hands-on investigations and clear presentation of findings.

Creativity, curiosity, and collaboration are encouraged throughout our wider curriculum, underpinned by our school values.

A highlight is our residential visit to the Anderton Centre, which offers children the chance to develop their teamwork, resilience and independence.

Please see our knowledge organisers for more details about our learning each half term.

Homework

Children are expected to read 5 times per week.

Parents should sign their child’s diary after they have read with their child.

Children with fewer than 4 signed entries per week may be asked to read with a teacher at playtimes.

We cannot stress enough the importance of daily reading to boost fluency, enjoyment and comprehension skills. Please support your child to read five times a week to maximise their progress in school.

Homework will be set on a weekly basis. It will be given out on a Friday and due in the following Wednesday. All children are expected to complete the tasks set.

Year 5 and 6 will enter school by the main gate at 8.40am and leave via the same gate at 3.20pm. Punctuality in the mornings is of paramount importance.

They do not need to bring any other equipment (pens, pencils, rubbers etc) into school.
